East Side Mario’s

Leaning my chair back against a half finished brick wall and sitting next to the Statue of Liberty holding a tomato brought a unique atmosphere to East Side Mario’s, even down to the map showing where Mario had his first kiss.

So, the pizza. I’m not sure if its always been this way, but the pizza came square. Personally, I like my round pizza. It’s just not the same if it comes as square.

East Side Mario’s had a sweet pizza sauce. A good sauce should blend in with and complement all of the other ingredients in a pizza to make the experience unforgettable; in this case, the sauce was just a bit too sweet, slightly distracting from the rest of the pizza.

The pizza we ordered was double pepperoni - or so we were told. When it arrived, there was actually very little pepperoni. And I do mean little pepperoni. To continue with other toppings, the cheese was also very sparse and I found myself halfway through a slice with little or no toppings left on the pizza.

Despite this lack of toppings, what toppings there were were very good. The pepperoni and cheese were full of flavor, but unfortunately the lack of brings the pizza down a notch.

We may have had an off night, or maybe the East Side Mario’s in downtown Halifax might make it better. We’ll have to go and try to see how similar the pizza between the different locations in the city compare to each other.

3/5 for a pizza with potential.
