Freeman’s Little New York proclaims itself as the second oldest pizza maker in Halifax. Does older equate better? Will Freeman’s live up to the exceptions of second oldest, or will it fall short of the coveted number one spot in the pizza hall of fame?

Well, I give Freeman’s a 3/5. Slightly above average, but not mind-blowing.

Freeman’s reminded me of Gatsby’s Pub and Eatery. It had a similar look to the restaurant. Pub like, and the same lamp shades. As for the pizza?

At Freeman’s, a medium pizza with 3 toppings cost $12.50, so we ordered double pepperoni. I would have gone for the triple, but my fellow Patrollers didn’t seem up to it. Along with our milkshakes (oh, yes we did) and fancy forks, we were ready to dig in - trusting Bill that Freeman’s was a reputable pizza maker. While not disappointing, the pizza wasn’t anything amazing. The crust and cheese were about average, and there didn’t seem to be much sauce except near the outer crust, but what sauce there was was very nice. The double pepperoni was hardly single pepperoni. There was a faint spice to the pizza that added to the flavor. Overall, it contributed to an above average pizza.

3/5 for a recommended stop for anyone who loves pizza.

I just wanted to add one detail that Ben forgot in his post, in regards to the crust. At Freeman’s the crust is very different from the other joints we have been to so far. At Freeman’s the crust is pretty much garlic bread instead of plain dough. The crust added to the flavor of the whole pizza instead of just being a bland strip of dough along the edge. I think that whether or not you like garlic bread would be the most important factor in deciding whether or not you like Freeman’s pizza. I loved the pizza because it was different but some people might be turned off by the idea of a garlic bread crust. In all, I really enjoyed Freeman’s pizza, it had an uncanny resemblance to Gatsby’s, from the bar to the lamp shades, honestly it was like deja vue, but Freeman’s gets extra points for having a back corner both designated for cheaters. Not even joking, its hidden behind the national basketball champions and the newlywed booths.
