Pizza Girls

2.5/5324 Portland Street Dartmouth

Well, the plan was to hit up Pizza Girls (formerly Appetizers Pizza, as they take care to note on their sign) and then watch some classic movies (namely, The Princess Bride - an absolutely splendid movie if you havn’t seen - and a bit of Monty Python). Since this is the Pizza Patrol though, we’ll skip the awesomeness of the movies and move on to Pizza Girls.

Pizza Girls was one of the larger pizzas we have ordered to date - over 250 square inches of pepperoni pizza bliss. Normally we attempt slices, but Pizza Girls doesn’t offer slices so we ordered a special including a massive pepperoni pizza.

“The best pizza in town

- Bill Cosby
March 28, 1998

I may not fully agree with Bill, but Gatsby’s was good. The overall atmosphere was a nice change from most pizza joints. Nice plates, too. Very pizza friendly.

Gatsbys was the first place the Patrol has gone that wasn’t big chain or have the feel of small joint. It had that pub feeling. It was a pub, so I guess that would explain it. But the pool tables were closed, so shame on you Gatsby.

Pizza Town

2.5/5575 Main Street Dartmouth

Pizza Town is kind of a mid-size joint. They have 6 locations in Metro. Not a big corporation, not a small joint. Mid-sized. And that’s exactly how the pizza was.

When we got there, there weren’t enough slices for everyone so we ended up ordering a pepperoni pizza, straight from the oven. Despite the fact that it was scalding hot when we started to dig in, it was kind of bland. Nothing jumped out to say good or bad. The pepperoni was a bit of a disappointment; it was a type that reminded me of salomi. Definitely not a good thing.

Jim’s Pizza House

2/5243 Bedford Highway Halifax

What better to do on a Friday afternoon then go out with some friends to get some good pizza? This Friday was a bit different though, as we had guest pizza critique Kim along to join us on the Pizza Patrol.

We went to Jim’s Pizza House, a small local restaurant and ordered a large pepperoni pizza. Other than the cheap price, the pizza didnt have much to talk about. It brought to mind a store bought frozen pizza that you cook at home. It just had that taste about it. The sauce wasn’t very good at all, and the crust was very store-boughtish. The cheese was good, and there was lots of it. Nice and stringy. A bit dissappointing as the restaurant smelled delicious as we walked in.

Boston Pizza

3.5/5611 Portland Street Dartmouth

It’s Valentine’s Day, so the heart shaped pizza from Boston Pizza was the most obvious choice for today’s cuisine. It was delightful, to say the least.

I give Boston Pizza 3.5/5 slices. It was a delicious pizza all over. They had a very nice crust, crispy and yet oh so soft at the same time. It had a nice, subtle taste to it. Nothing to overpower and take away from the pizza, but just the right amount to add to the overall expereience and flavor of the pizza. The dough of the crust was fully cooked through, and was soft. A big plus, as too often I see an undercooked inner crust. The sauce was tasty and in ample supply, and the pepperoni was superb. The entire pizza had that crispiness to it in just the right amount, adding to the taste and yet not too much to be burnt or too hard to chew. There are no real complaints to speak of, but there just wasn’t that wow! factor to warrant a higher rating.
